Obama Sending 30,000 More Troops to Afghanistan - Some Things Just Don't Change

To quote a recent Michael Moore open letter to Obama:

"When we elected you we didn't expect miracles. We didn't even expect much change. But we expected some. We thought you would stop the madness. Stop the killing. Stop the insane idea that men with guns can reorganize a nation that doesn't even function as a nation and never, ever has."

Quoting Hank Stamper from Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion, a friend warned me last fall not to expect much from Obama because he is a politician, and all politicians are alike. At least when it comes to waging war in faraway places, my friend was right.

According to the news reports, the U.S. will have over 100,000 troops in Afghanistan once all of the additional troops get there. Haven't we and others been down this road before? What is behind the decision that they are not telling us?

  1. I saw Moore say this as well and when I did, I immediately thought he missed something that Obama was saying all along in his campaign. Obama said we had taken our eye off the ball (afghanistan) when we started Iraq war. I think he always said he was going to focus back on the afghan war and finish the job. As such, I think Obama never flipped.

  2. You are right. It was one campaign promise I didn't want him to keep!
