Sir Roger Bannister ran mile in 3 minutes, 59.4 seconds on May 6, 1964, becoming the first person to break the four-minute barrier, an achievement that mid-distance runners had be striving for unsuccessfully for many years. The record didn't last long (it was broken just a few weeks later). That said, it has been said that more people have climbed Mr. Everett than run sub-four minute miles. The current record 60 years later is just over 3 minutes, 43 seconds.
Bannister's achèvement is something to remember.
